It doesn't help that once Puss starts trusting Humpty again, he gets backstabbed by his adopted brother for a second time. Puss carries a combination of guilt, resentment, regret, and shame because of this incident and is constantly in conflict of whether he is meant to be a good person or not. Obviously, Puss gets angry at this betrayal and escapes from the town police when they surround a fallen Humpty. Humpty feels betrayed by Puss's sudden turn to good and tricks him into helping him steal money from the bank. Eventually as they grow up, Puss saves the Commandante's mothers from a raging bull and is seen as a hero and is awarded his signature boots by his adopted mother. The two become thieves in order to find the beans which led to them getting in trouble with the law and disappointing their adopted mother. Humpty shared with Puss his secret of wanting to find magical beans that could grown a bean stalk to a magical golden goose that could lay eggs. The two had grown up in an orphanage and became close after Puss defended Humpty from bullies and became friends. Puss is plagued by his past and "desire to believe the best in someone else" as he longs for the notion of a strong friendship despite it getting him into trouble. Inspired by characters like Zorro and Pepe Le Pew, Puss enjoys being flirtatious and is proud of it as he claims to be a "lover, not a fighter." He sometimes goes as far as to hit on human women as seen in Shrek 2 when a newly turned human Fiona asks if he's Shrek only for him to reply: "For you, baby: I could be." Despite his roots, his own film takes a more serious route and explores Puss's backstory. He is overly confident, swashbuckling, and dangerous which makes him both charming and hilarious. Asides from Shrek being a comedic franchise, Puss's initial comic relief traits can be seen with him being a small cat with a deep voice who often takes himself too seriously.
He was initially created to be a second comic relief alongside Donkey for Shrek in Shrek 2 but ended up becoming a complex character and fan favorite as well as filmmaker favorite.
